When you join Civil, your money supports newsrooms that are doing the toughest work out there.
Support top investigative journalists as they root out corruption that otherwise wouldn't have come to light. Help bring news back to communities that have lost their local papers. Protect journalists where they face censorship. With your help, we can support more newsrooms like the ones that have already been backed by Civil:
Block Club Chicago reporters used to work for DNAinfo Chicago, but its billionaire owner shut it down. Now they're giving Chicago back its local news.
When the Denver Post was gutted by its new hedge fund owners, it was another sad story of the death of a local paper. But then some of its best journalists started The Colorado Sun.
14ymedio is the first independent newsroom in Cuba, where the government controls the media and has outlawed the newsroom for being critical of the regime. The team evades censorship to publish more than a dozen stories a day.
Sludge is fearlessly telling investigative stories, unafraid of offending powerful interests.
EcoWURD is telling environmental stories from the perspective of the those most vulnerable to ecological disaster, but whose voices you rarely hear: communities of color.
Rappler, founded by Time Magazine Person of the Year Maria Ressa, is upholding truth and fighting for freedom of expression under President Rodrigo Duterte's repressive regime.

Why do I need to buy Civil tokens to support journalism?
When you become a member of Civil, 100% of the net proceeds go to the Civil Foundation, which supports journalism around the world. You will also receive an equivalent amount of Civil tokens, which represent your share and say on the Civil platform. As we release more features, Civil tokens will provide members with additional uses, such as the ability to support newsrooms in new ways.

I don't live in the US. Can I still become a Civil member?

What level membership should I buy?
First, the more you spend, the more money the Civil Foundation has to do its work. Second, you will have more of a say on the platform if you own a larger proportion of Civil tokens. We encourage you to give it a try at whatever level makes you comfortable.
How long will it take me to purchase my membership if I have never used tokens before?
It will take approximately 15 minutes to set up your account, take our tutorial, and complete your purchase. After that, your blockchain journey should be pretty smooth!
How is this different than Civil's first token sale?
This is NOT just another "token sale": there are no hard caps, soft caps or time limits. Instead, we are selling Civil memberships, which includes an equivalent amount of Civil tokens based on your contribution. For more details, read our full explanation here.
How can we stop someone from obtaining so many tokens that they can control the vote and hence the platform?
Civil has built a series of checks and balances into its system to ensure that no single individual or entity can exercise outsized influence. To learn more about our ethical values and community governance, see the Civil Constitution
What is the difference between donating to the Civil Foundation and becoming a member of the Civil platform?
Civil token holders own and run the Civil platform together with journalists, and they get to make key community decisions. The proceeds of the token sale go to the Civil Foundation, to help it do its work. A donation to the Foundation is wholly separate from buying tokens. When you donate directly to the Foundation you help an independent non-profit organization fulfill its mission, but you do not become a member of the platform.
